PROGESTERONE TESTING & MATING
Blood progesterone is one of the most important tools to pin point ovulation and plan for a successful mating. It also helps to determine the time of ultrasound and birth.
ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION – TCI
This may be necessary when a natural mating is not successful or chilled and frozen semen are used. TCI ensures that the semen is positioned through the cervix into the uterus with the help of an endoscope.
ULTRASOUND
Ultrasound in the bitch is usually performed between Day 25-35 of pregnancy. This can be important to know about a single puppy pregnancy (possible Caesarean) or on the other hand feeding for a large litter.
INDUCTION OR POSTPONEMENT OF SEASON
Bitches have a habit of not coming into season for a long time or coming into season at the wrong time. Both of these can be influenced through treatments available from veterinary surgeons.

This is not so much about the surgical procedure but more about decision making at the time and planing ahead to avoid this problem.

SEMEN COLLECTION
Semen collections can be used to evaluate semen quality and to process semen for AI, chilled and frozen transport.
SEMEN ANALYSIS
Evaluating semen is a vital part of making sure a stud dog is fertile and for processing semen for chilled and frozen transport.
The fertility of the male can be assessed by looking at the semen quality.
A semen evaluation includes;
- Motility
- Morphology
- Total Sperm Output
Together they will give you a good indicator of whether this male is able to sire a litter of normal size.
We recommend testing semen when:
- you are buying a mature stud dog
- Before using a dog for the first time whatever the age
- Dogs over 5 years of age that have not been used for more than 6 months
CHILLED SEMEN
By chilling semen its lifetime can be extended by many days and it can be shipped in the UK as well as abroad.
This can be done in the fridge at the premises or in specialised chiller boxes for transport. Chiller boxes will only keep cold for 24-36h which limits transport time and especially any delays through customs.
Companies like FedEx and DHL pick up and deliver door to door.
It can be used very successfully within the UK.
The semen is collected, evaluated for quality, extender is added and the shipment is packed in a special box.
FROZEN SEMEN
Once semen is frozen it can be stored indefinitely and also transported all over the world.
The oldest frozen semen in store now is over fifty years old.
The semen is collected evaluated and undergoes several steps before being frozen over liquid nitrogen vapour and plunged into the nitrogen for storage.
- Semen freezing is a good idea when:
- Preserving genetics for longevity
- Keeping semen in stock for bitches even when you are not available
- Exporting semen to countries further away (Australia, NZ) or where customs is an issue (EU)
- Importing semen form abroad for your own breeding program
Frozen semen can be moved easily in special transport containers so called ‘dry shippers’ and FedEx and DHL deliver door to door.
VCR is working closely with an experienced team to safely store, export and import frozen canine semen from around the globe. This central hub provides breeders with a safe place to store their dogs semen for many years to come.
EXPORT OF SEMEN
The export of semen is regulated for each country and needs careful planing. The VCR has a central hub that organises and co-ordinates shipment to find the cheapest way for combined shipments.
